While still a relatively young sport (less than three decades old), cowboy action shooting is a
fast growing activity that combines target shooting with nostalgia for the Old West. Then run
over to another window and fire at targets with their other pistol, and finally, pick
up the shotgun and knock over four different targets.My kids and I have been to
several "cowboy events" and at every one we've been made to feel welcome -- even
though we didn't look like cowboys ourselves. Rifles are required to be empty and the
lever left open, and the shotguns are required to be empty and in the "broken
open" position.The CompetitionThere are many different ways an event can be staged, but in most
cases the shooting takes place in a mock western town or building. Competitors shoot one
at a time while a range office watches for safety violations, a time keeper times
Nike Requin the round, and other helpers watch for hits and misses.The competitor might be required to
shoot one pistol at targets through a bank window, then switch to a rifle and
shoot more targets. Besides the authentic clothing you must choose a "cowboy alias" and that's
what you're known as at the matches. The rifles are lever-action style, and the shotguns
are double-barreled or the 1897-style pump.Safety is paramount at action shooting events. The guns and
costumes are all typical of what would have been found in the last half of
the 1800s.Costumes? Yep, one requirement for participating in the matches is that you look the
part. It's not uncommon to see an entire family at a shooting match -- all
of them dressed like they stepped out of an episode of Gunsmoke or Little House
on the Prairie.And if you talk to some of the cowboys walking around at a
chaussures puma match, you'll soon discover they answer to an alias rather than their real name. Most
people involved with cowboy action shooting are ready to talk about their hobby (or sport,
or obsession, depending on the person) so keep an eye out for a competition near
you and drop in to say "Howdy."You just may find a fun new activity for

choose is unique, so if you're able to get "Shaky Hand Joe" or "Colorado Fats"
you know you're the only one with that name.While the women can shoot against the
men, there are different divisions based on age, so competitors shoot against folks at least
close to their age.The Firearms UsedThe pistols and rifles used in cowboy action shooting are
those that would have been in used in the late 1800s, although replicas can be
used as well as authentic antique firearms. Others allow old west "style" clothing, and some
even allow clothing that you might have seen in an old western movie, such as
Roy Rogers or Dale Evans.What you won't see are baseball caps and sneakers -- unless
being worn by a spectator, and even those not competing are encouraged to dress the
part.The Cowboys and Cowgirls (and even Cowkids!)Cowboy action shooting mainly attracts men, but a number
of women are involved in the sport and even kids can get involved. Some organizations
require historically accurate clothing, right down to the horn buttons. All firearms are required to
remain unloaded unless you are "on the line" and competing at that moment. The pistols
